Carl V. Nygard

Carl V. Nygard was born on April 6, 1895, the first of the Nygard offspring to Joseph and Johanna Nygard. He worked in a local Newark button factory as a laborer as a young boy and met Anna Frances Rodgers. He married Anna Francis Fitzpatrick sometime around 1915 and settled into a rented home on 141 Wilson Avenue, Apartment #74 in Newark, New Jersey. Anna Fitzpatrick's mother, Anna, lived with them at the time. She was of Welsh and Irish descent and was born around 1857. In 1916 they lived at 263 Mulberry in Newark, NJ and in 1922 they were residing at 192 Walnut Street, Newark, NJ. His job description was a riveter.

Carl was an Ironworker who worked on the Ben Franklin Bridge in the 1920's. Construction on the Ben Franklin Bridge began in January, 1922, but it was unknown when he left Newark for Philadelphia.  He was a member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers, Local Union #361, Brooklyn, New York, membership #102244.

Sometime in the 1920's his wife Anna walked out on him.  In 1929 he spent 30 days in jail for vagrancy in Allegheny County Prison. Efforts to contact him were made by his grand-daughter Sandy, but little information was found. From his Census information we know that he lived in Philadelphia in the 1930's and was incarcerated in 1940 in the Chester County Jail located in West Chester. He may have been released in 1941 as he showed an address of 235 N. 9th Street in Philadelphia as a place of residence at that time. A reference about an incident was reported on February 10, 1942 stating he was treated for lacerations and abrasions to his lip while struck by a vehicle. He listed a residence in Arlington, NJ at that time. 

He died around 1955 in Philadelphia.
