Mary Madore Pitocco
Mary was born on January 16, 1913 and died on April 15, 2002. Mary was a wonderful woman whose childhood involved being married at 12 1/2 years old!
Mary married Ellie Pitocco after a short courtship. Ellie had immigrated to the United States in 1923 and went to live with his cousin Tony Bianca at 319 E. Penn Street, which was the old Madore home. The Bianca's later moved out of the house but Ellie found Mary living only a couple of houses down at 335 E. Penn Street. Ellie had convinced Mary's mother, Virginia DeSantis, to let him take Mary to the movies on a date. Instead of going to the movies Ellie brought Mary to Elkton, Maryland to get married. What a date! It was a wonderful relationship that lasted for over 60 years. After 25 years of marriage, Ellie insisted on getting married in the Church, and they renewed their vows at Holy Saviour Parish at 409 E. Main Street in Norristown. Ellie contacted his family at this time in an effort to obtain his birth certificate, but it was destroyed during a war in Italy.
Mary had her first child, James, at the ripe old age of 13. We think Virginia was also giving birth at the same time, in the same hospital! She also has a daughter, Mary, who was very instrumental in helping with our web site. Another of Mary’s daughters, Edith, died tragically at the age of 10. Mary also lost another child after delivery.
Mary kept an immaculate home and made the same bow tie Christmas cookies that her mother, Virginia DeSantis did. It was not uncommon to see Uncle Ellie eating over the sink so as to not get any crumbs in the house!
Ellie Pitocco was born on January 7, 1907 and died in January, 1987. He immigrated from Italy along with numerous relatives, some of whom lived and worked with him. He did arrive through the Ellis Island sometime around 1923. They lived in Chester at 111 Kerlin Street and later moved to Essington. Ellie was employed in the early 1930's at the Baldwin locomotive plant, where he also got his cousin, Edward Corlino a job as a watchman at the Baldwin plant as well. Other possible cousins and uncles related to Ellie are the Boncosti's.
